T127 - 1870's Zinc Covered Trunk, Key & Tray

$525.00

Size: 31" wide, 21" tall, 18" deep.

A rare early 1870's barrel top trunk in excellent refurbished condition. Made of thick wood with original zinc covering, oak slats, and brass lock and trim. The solid brass lock works well, is marked "Star Lock Works, Patent Mar. '69 and Sep. '69" and comes with the ornate barrel key! The wood slats have beautiful grain and color. There are original brass head studs on the metal bands and zinc panels. It's a very solid and sturdy trunk. The leather handles have been replaced, the fancy metal caps are original. The interior has been cleaned and refinished. Antique Victorian lithograph prints and trim are in the lid. The wood lift out tray is covered with fabric as well as the bottom interior section. The bottom is metal covered, in very good clean condition and repainted.

Zinc covered trunks were made in America from the late 1860's to about 1880 and are not very common. The zinc sheets were imported from Europe and used because zinc does not corrode as much as the sheet iron that was often used. While there are small dents and signs of use, this trunk and the zinc have held up very well for 150 years!

Great for display and for storage! A great collectible trunk and very hard to find in such nice condition. If you have any questions please contact me at Marvin@ThisOldTrunk.com
