T124 - Rare Martin Maier Slat Trunk - SOLD 01/2020
$1,995.00
Size: 35" wide, 27" tall, 21" front to back (measured to edges of outer slats).
A beautiful wood slat covered trunk made by Martin Maier & Company of Detroit, Michigan from the 1885 to 1895 period. A scarce trunk, with a barrel top and alternating light and dark wood slats. The wood slats on this trunk are made of two different types of wood and have beautiful grain (see detailed pictures). Very few Martin Maier slat trunks are found and this one is in excellent condition. This style was advertised in a Maier catalog as a "rustic trunk covered entirely with hardwood slats". It is of superior quality and based on the Excelsior trunk patent of 1868, which most people now call "Oak Slat Trunks". Maier established his trunk company in 1865 after serving in the Civil War and later obtained the sole rights to manufacture slat trunks in the mid-west area. This special trunk is not common in any way! Martin Maier & Co developed their distinctive narrow slat style trunk sometime in the late 1870's and examples are very hard to find. These are made of hardwood strips over an all wood body. These trunks were made to be impressive and were more expensive to make than the ordinary metal or canvas covered trunks and that's probably why they are so rare today. The hardware styles on this trunk date it to approximately 1885 to about 1895. The special corner "lid stay" hinges were patented and hold the lid when opened. The front catches were patented in 1882 by a large trunk parts maker. All of the hardware is original and in great condition and the wood has no breaks or missing wood. No sand blasting or polyurethane coating has been done on this trunk as some other restorers do. The interior is beautiful with a nice Victorian style chromolithograph print, colorful trim, and the blue Maier label. The small glove box with the cover is in the lid. The trunk has a deep two section lift out wood tray. The tray and inside bottom section have been carefully cleaned out and refinished. The trunk bottom has original wood slats with iron rollers and metal covering which is very clean. Thick stitched leather handles have been replaced, using the original steel holders. The original lock has a working key! A great size to use for storage and display in your home. I see Louis Vuitton trunks for sale every day for much higher prices, but rarely see a trunk of this beautiful style. A very functional and collectible American made antique trunk that is quite unique. The buyer will also receive copies of the original hardware and slat trunk patents. This trunk is very well made and strong. Pick up or delivery arrangements may also be made, so please check with us if you have any questions.
