T115 - 1890's Trunk with Super Interior - SOLD 09/2011

Size: 28" wide, 21 1/2" tall, 18 1/2" deep.

This old trunk is a style made by many American trunk makers from the 1880's through the early 1900's. It has a slightly curved top as you can see from some of the pictures. Most trunk makers called these Dress trunks, Ladies trunks, Canvas covered trunks, etc. This one is from the late 1880's to 1890's due to the 1883 patent catches, 1884 patent lock, the heavy flat slat clamps, and the narrow iron banding around the trunk. In the late 1890's most trunk makers changed over to the newer style brass plated hardware, which this trunk did not have. Made very strong, from pine with hardwood slats, probably elm, and lots of sturdy hardware. The original worn canvas covering was removed and the beautiful wood was carefully hand sanded and given a low gloss satin finish. All of the hardware is original, including the iron bottom rollers which are in great condition. The lock works and has one original key. The handles were replaced with custom made double layer leather handles, using the old star pattern holders. It has a fabulous interior! The original pine tray was totally refinished and the hat or bonnet compartment cover was restored. The original fancy Victorian style trim was preserved in the lid as well as the wonderful chromolithograph of a girl with her jump rope! The trunk was cleaned out and relined with good quality fabric in shades of blue. The closeup picture shows what the fabric pattern and colors really look like.
